The Inner Shield is described as a large, golden shield that protects The First World and prevents unwanted inter-dimensional ingress from outside. The Inner Shield is a last line of defense, situated behind a barrier made of Farming Worlds and other realities, beyond which is the Outer Shield, which is intended to protect all of the human populated realities in that section of the multiverse.

The Inner Shield is generated and supported by vast machines located on The First World and some supporting Branch Worlds. Due to the immense compression the universes are under, the machinery is generating vast quantities of heat, which are affecting weather conditions across the entirety of The First World.

Due to the structures of both the Inner Shield, Outer Shield and Branch Worlds, should the Outer Shield fail completely and the full compression of The Crushing Fist be exerted on the Inner Shield, The First World will be the focal point of the destruction.

The Inner Shield, Outer Shield and Branch Worlds were constructed with the assistance of the Brownshirts, who helped The First World when it was a new power in the multiverse.
