The Black is the name given to an event that occurs every 24 hours in the original reality of Jonathan Cortin. The Black is characterized by the coming of a literal darkness, similar to The Ink. As the Black descends, the entities dwelling within it begin to attack the minds of any and all living sentient creatures. In addition, anyone caught in the open appears to be attacked and dismembered violently.

The Black also shares many traits of the Shadow Sphere, with Jonathan Cortin describing it as a type of living nightmare. Within it are many entities similar to the Shadow Entity, which also take delight in causing sadistic pain to their victims.

The Black can be successfully repelled through use of a very large mechanism comprising a Portal hub facility and an enormous particle accelerator. The mechanism takes approximately 24 hours to charge, and releases a pulse that strengthens the Outer Shield and walls of the local and surrounding realities.
